Anyway, I thought you'd enjoy seeing this.

http://media.putfile.com/Steve-Jobs-Apple-Keynote-Bloopers

The Sony exec is hilarious. And when Jobs silently sends a stern message to his tech staff when he throws the non-functioning digital camera to/at them, during the non-functional camera plug & play demo… again, ROFLtastic.

So for the record, Billg's not the only one that encounters difficulties during his keynote speeches.

And they've pulled out all the stops. The Bungie team, unlike previous versions of Halo, has been given what seems to be, a tremendous amount of time to make sure that the game exceeds expectations. Everyone knows that this is the crown - the Everest - the omega product for the XBox 360: If it doesn't consume all of the XBox 360's power, capabilities, and fan base, no game will. Not Grand Theft Auto 4, not Too Human, not Gears of War.

Bungie did a cool thing: They're not just building a historic game... they're documenting the creation. This is the first of hopefully what will be many insights into the Halo 3 development process. They explain what the heck happened in the trailer (which was very interesting to me considering that I didn't understand everything) and they even show clips of stuff that WASN'T in the trailer.

Our own Director of Music, Marty O'Donnell from Bungie Studios (a division of Microsoft) was on hand to help lead the orchestra in a rousing performance of the "Theme from Halo".

They've recorded it here:

http://www.videogameslive.com/trailer/vgl_halo.wmv

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-02-25T12:44:13Z</dcterms:modified>

MULTIMEDIA: Microsoft's proposed Intracampus Transit system

Since many of you have never seen Microsoft's campus before, I thought I'd write about something that would give you an idea of how big the place is. Once if was just as cluster of 6 "X" shaped buildings, it's now a sprawling campus with a "lake", several football/frisbee football fields, a dozen or so basketball courts, a more than a dozen cafeterias... and these cafeterias are HUGE - some of them operate 24/7. Think about the size of your local Shopping Mall's food court. Yeah. That big.

In any case, there's a company that's proposing (again) a light rail transit system of sorts leveraging people-mover like cars that move about like a Disneyland ride. The proposal is here: http://gettherefast.org/bettercampus.html

This is a video that demonstrates what the rail system would look like and it's benefits web page:
VIDEO: http://www.cities21.org/MS.wmv
WEB: http://www.cities21.org/Redmond.htm

Note that I said, "again" above. This proposal has been put forth over and over again over the last 10 years I've been employed and the pluses and minuses never seemed to gel. Now this proposal's been put forth and it's the first that I've been privy to with such "marketing detail" around it.

Kinda spiffy to dream I suppose. It's not like people REALLY have traffic jams around the campus - but there are times when getting a shuttle can be a challenge and I could imagine how a system like this would be very convenient... albeit costly.

What would probably enable this to take off would be a system in which people could park elsewhere, the take the light rail system to their office because PARKING is always a problem at Microsoft. Also something where good coffee and the the local Pro Club (the gym everyone belongs to) are interconnected for midday coffee or a workout.

There's a tool out there called TweakMP or the TweakUI for Windows Media Player 9/10. It surprises me how little people know about this tool. It can be downloaded from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/getmore/tweakmp_readme.aspx

After you install this tool, as a presenter, if you ever have to do full screen demos or full screen video shows, (which you can initiate by pressing ALT-ENTER within Windows Media Player 9/10) you'll appreciate the following tweaks:

1) DISABLE CONTROLS APPEARANCE UNLESS THE MOUSE IS AT THE TOP/BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN.

You do not want the video to go out of full screen mode when you accidentally bump the mouse, such as when you are at a trade show expo or event. So what you need to do is, after installation, open Windows Media Player. Access the PowerToy in the Player by clicking “Tools”, pointing to “Plug-ins”, and clicking “TweakMP”. In the TweakMP window, click the “Full-Screen” tab. Select the radio button "Only when the mouse pointer is at the top or bottom of the screen".

2) DISABLE RESIZE VIDEO

You also don't want the video shrinking and growing everytime you have to bring up the FF/RW controls in full screen, so uncheck the check box "Resize video when full-screen controls are displayed".

3) MAKE THE CONTROLS & THE MOUSE DISAPPEAR QUICKLY & MAKE TRANSITIONS GO QUICKLY

Adjust both of the “Timeout Settings” to “Shorter”. Leave the “Transition style” as “Vertical”. Adjust the “Transition speed” to “Faster”.

Close the window and restart whatever video you're playing. Test out full screen and the tweaks you've made.

Good selling!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-01-12T22:15:51Z</dcterms:modified>

HOWTO: Capture/Record Macromedia Flash Streaming Video

Question: "How do I capture/record a streaming video that's done using Macromedia Flash?"

This is the question that many people have asked me in some form or another, the most common format of this question is, "How do I capture a video from <website>.com... because I've searched my Internet Cache for the .SWF file or the .FLV file and I've come up with nothing?" Some online video sites now use the less efficient & less capable Macromedia Flash format for delivering video content and up 'til now, Flash Video has been so minimally used that there have been virtually no tools for the end user to use to record the video and its associated audio.

Tonight I just decided to just hash it out and write a quick tutorial on how to record any Flash video you see on the Internet into a Windows Media .WMV file that you can then save and archive for your own offline playback.

(Note the following was done on a 2.0Ghz Pentium M laptop in a hotel room Internet connection

1) DOWNLOAD REPLAY SCREENCAST ($19)

Replay Screencast is a low resource video capture program that records both the 30 fps full color video you're seeing on the screen as well the stereo audio being sent to your speakers. And please don't pirate it - pay for it. Applian, the company that makes the product deserves your patronage.

2) CONFIGURE AUDIO/VIDEO SETTINGS

Set the "Audio device" to the audio adapter on your machine.

Set the "Audio recording line" to the channel that the audio is outputting to - usually "Wave Out Mix" or something like that.

Set the Video frames per second to 30 and the bit rate to 750KBps. This isn't at all optimal but heck, all we want is a file right now right? We can tweak this later for file size and bandwidth consumption but for right now, let's just make sure we get the content.

Set the "Smoothness" to 50 and select the "High Motion Video" radio button.

3) SET VIDEO RECORDING REGION

This is where it get's a little tricky. Basically, you need to open up the window in which you plan to playback the video in question. For example, if you were to go to say, http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6905089586228877019&q=sushi, you can initiate playback and press the pause button. (This is actually good because the video will buffer in the background while you are doing other things.)

Now back on the Screencast Setting menu, set the "Video Recording Region" to the "Screen Region" radio button.

Now, click the crosshairs that you see next to the words, "Screen Region". Your mouse will turn into the cross hairs... move the crosshairs to the upper left hand corner of the video window in your browser and click the LEFT mouse button.

Now drag the mouse to the bottom left hand corner of the video you wish to capture (a rubber band will appear) and click the RIGHT mouse button.

You should see that the values for "Top left" and "Bottom right" are now filled in on the Screencast Settings dialog box.

Click the OK button to close the Settings window - you're done.

4) RECORD VIDEO

Press "Record" in the Screencast window.

Click the browser window that has the video in question and start the video by either pressing PLAY or UNPAUSING the video. Stay in the context of the browser to maximize foreground performance.

When the video is done, press STOP in the Screencast window.

...you're done. You should have a file labeled something like "Replay Screencast 2006-01-09-02.49.wmv" in your recordings folder with a brand new recording of the Flash that was streamed to you. The file is a full digital fidelity encoding that is streamable from a Windows Media Server and/or playable offline from your own PC.

I've found that this tool and method produces excellent results as long as the video capture window doesn't exceed 800x600 (which you really shouldn't have to do anyway) and this is just because of the required processing overhead of running both the Windows Media libraries as well as Flash Player. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that the Flash video is playing back in the original dimensions it was recorded in. (Since you can't get any better fidelity than that)

To do this in in some players:

- Click the Down arrow

- Select "Original Size"

That's it.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-01-09T12:41:19Z</dcterms:modified>

MULTIMEDIA: Microsoft's Home of the Future on NBC's Today Show

Thursday, on NBC's "The Today Show," Robbie Bach will announce a $300,000 software donation pledge to the "Today Show"'s Annual Holiday Gift Drive, marking the fifth year we have participated in the Gift Drive.

But we showed one of these videos and a couple short clips were actually video recorded by Paul Thurott. I'm quite surprised that he got these out of the convention center as there's typically no videos allowed. I'm sure he was provided some "special access" but these videos are usually only for the people attending so, again, I'm very surprised.

Nonetheless, if you want to check them out here's the links - they're only 30 seconds or so a piece:
VIDEO1: http://winsupersite.com/files/pdc2005-nap01.wmv
VIDEO2: http://winsupersite.com/files/pdc2005-nap02.wmv

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-09-15T16:43:44Z</dcterms:modified>

VIDEO: Marc McDonald - Employee #1 at Microsoft

Here's a fascinating interview with Marc McDonald from Microsoft.

Marc is the VERY FIRST employee of Microsoft and he's still with us to this day. I won't even begin to try to explain what he used to do and what he does now - just watch the video. What's funny is that

He shows the very first Microsoft business card, and he discusses why his employee ID is not "#1" and how many people worked to try to get him Employee ID #1 today, and why it wasn't possible.

This guy is sharp... but you can tell he's just plain an uber-coder. A true "Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott" aka "Scotty".

Do we need to say anything more?

Visit Bill in his office for a few minutes to talk about where he sees the future going. This is a fun interview, prepares you for the PDC that's coming next week.
