Includes great mapping capabilities.

The Live Toolbar plugin for Internet Explorer is now http://toolbar.live.com/. It has some nice features, including a number of mapping related tools:

1. Recognize addresses on a web page and map all of them at once. This is great when you are at a http://osf.com/locations/menu-by-locations.htm with a bunch of addresses and you want to see them all on a map at once to compare them. with one click in Live Toolbar the addresses are passed to Live Local as a new scratchpad. You can view them, save them as a Collection, or share them with a friend. See the OSF screenshot below. One thing i really like about this feature is that the recognizer apparently is parsing the DOM in realtime, so it is compatible with AJAX sites, web forms and web editors! It not only parses the initially loaded page, but if an Asynchronous call is made to the server that delivers address information to the web page, they appear in the dropdown list as well.

2. Get interactive inline maps on any web page. with Toolbar installed, whenever you highlight some text on a webpage a smart menu appears with a list of ways to operate on the selected text. if the text you selected is a street address, one of the choices will be to see a map right there on the webpage without having to surf off to a mapping site. very convenient!

Here is a list of features in the toolbar.

http://toolbar.live.com/features.aspx?mkt=en-us

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-08-02T08:44:29Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: Halo 2 Soundtrack Volume 2

The folks at Bungie (a division of Microsoft) released the second volume of the Soundtrack of Halo 2. If you're interested, Amazon's got it for $12.95.

With the new package tracking answer, users can now use Search to access and follow the status of packages delivery process. We detect a tracking ID in the query and display a link to the right external provider to get shipping status of packages. In the US, we support FedEx, UPS, DHL and USPS.

Some sample queries:

Over the weekend, MSFT released the ability to make free phone calls on Windows Live Local (http://local.live.com). Basically, this is how you use it:

Go to http://local.live.com.

Search for a business or category.
In the results pane will be the listing with a “Call for free” link.

Click on "Call for free".
A dialog box will appear asking for your phone number.

Input your phone number and click “Call”.
Through a checkbox, you can also allow Windows Live Local to remember your phone number through a cookie so you don't have to enter it again in the future.

Windows Live Local will ring your phone within 1 or 2 seconds and connect you to the business. When you pick up the phone, you will hear a women say, "Connecting..." and you will be put through.

We've been working on this for a while - it's actually been in MSN Search for a bit but it didn't show up unless you were using MSN Desktop Search.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-07-04T01:32:10Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: Windows Live Custom Domains goes live!

Windows Live Custom Domains is a free service that allows a customers to use a custom domain name with Windows Live Mail and Hotmail. This would also enable someone who owns a domain to allow users to sign up for an e-mail account without prior authorization from the administrator.

For example:

- Instead of having kurtsmith@hotmail.com, janesmith@hotmail.com, and billysmith@hotmail.com

A user could buy a domain name like "smith.com" and associate it with their hotmail accounts using Windows Live Custom Domains.

- They could have kurt@smith.com, jane@smith.com, and billy@smith.com.

That version is included with SP2, but not installed by default. You can also download it separately from the link below.

We are proud to announce the release of the Systems Management Server 2003 R2, the latest addition to the Microsoft System Center family of management products.

Systems Management Server 2003 R2 helps streamline your IT infrastructure by improving client security and simplifying the distribution of updates for line-of-business and third-party software applications, quickly, cost-effectively, and efficiently.

SMS 2003 R2 provides the following key capabilities:

Inventory Tool for Custom Updates

Building a more secure and reliable infrastructure while lowering operating costs relies on the ability to update independent software vendor (ISV) and in-house applications as well as updates provided by Microsoft. With SMS 2003 R2 and the Inventory Tool for Custom Updates (ITCU), organizations can achieve this goal quickly and efficiently.

ITCU consists of two components:
• Integrated Scanner. Designed for evaluating target clients for software update compliance.
• Publishing Tool. Designed to allow the ISV or line-of business (LOB) application developer to create software update catalogs that can be imported into SMS. The native SMS 2003 Software Updates Management (SUM) functionality can then use these catalogs to determine applicability and automatically remediate as necessary.

Scenarios:
• Vendors create catalogs of update definitions for commercial software applications.
• Customers create catalogs of update definitions for in-house LOB applications.
• Solution-providers build catalogs of updates for organizations to which they provide services

Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment

Software installation errors and mis-configurations compromise security and stability, resulting in escalated support costs. Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment (STVA) can help prevent errors, increasing your organizational uptime and helping you build a more secure infrastructure. The tool provides vulnerability assessment reporting for common software mis-configurations using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.0 engine.

Scenarios:
• Scan for an organization’s vulnerabilities that may exist because of mis-configuration errors.
• Example checks made by STVA:
• Are unnecessary services installed and running?
• Do file shares have appropriate permissions?
• Is Windows Firewall enabled?
• Are automatic updates enabled?
• Are strong passwords enforced?
• Are unsecured guest accounts enabled?
• Are there too many local administrators on a single computer?

Device Management Feature Pack Update

In addition to releasing SMS 2003 R2, we are proud to announce the availability of the Device Management Feature Pack Update. This updated feature pack allows SMS 2003 to support Windows Mobile 5.

Download the bits and evaluate the technology. (All SMS customers that have Software Assurance will be getting this release.)

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-06-12T19:37:20Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: XBox 360's new console software

It seems that everyone and their mother has copied the XBox 360 news posting about the bazillion and a half features we added to XBox 360's console. Instead of rehashing the same story everyone else has been posting (you can read the features list here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2006/0605-springrelease-features.htm) I thought I'd comment on the 5 features that I think everyone SHOULD pay attention to.

DOWNLOAD MANAGER
While this may seem lame, the 360 was unable to downlaod anything while you did something else like play a game or listen to music. It was literally unable to multitask these two tasks which was lame as hell. The Xbox team heard the feed back and made the process multi-threaded... and thank god they did because if they hadn't, I'm sure Sony or Nintendo would have had something better.

Now you can cache up 6 downloads at a time and download that 150MB Halo 3 trailer, the Fight Night Round 3 demo, and the Theme for Kameo, all while you play Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter multiplayer.

SETTING CONSOLE THEMES
A theme is a 'skin' that sits atop the UI of the Xbox360 console. You can make your console's UI look like anything you want using these downloadable themes. I right now have a "Halo 3" theme loaded on my Xbox360 so when I turn it on, the console screen doesn't look anything like the normal Xbox360 screen.

The problem was that it used to take an act of congress to be able to change your theme. If you didn't know where or how to change your consoles theme, you were screwed because it was hidden way into the UI. Hell - I work for the company and I couldn't figure it out. Now it's very easy to find in the System blade of the console screen.

I consider this important because it's really a nice feature and I don't think anyone was using it because no one could figure out how to get to the config screen for it.

AUTO-CHANGING ONLINE STATUS
If your XBox360 screensaver kicks in, your online status automatically gets set to "Away" so that people know you've stepped out and are away from the console.

Before, people would IM you and try to invite you to games, not knowing you were eating dinner or in the bathroom.

PERSONAL GAMER PICTURES
I don't think anyone understands why this is important. It will be possible using the XBox 360 Vision Camera accessory coming this fall, to take your own photo and post it to Xbox Live account's personal gamer photo. This way people aren't looking at a comic or an avatar when they see you online. They'll actually see your face... but this will be restricted initially to just your "friends". In other words, the general public will see a totally different photo/gamer picture by default.

MUSIC PERSISTENCE
When you switch from the game to the console and back, your music continues to play from the Media Player in Xbox 360's console, without interruption. It was REALLY annoying playing a game or listening to some music in a game, then having someone IM you, and have the music suddenly STOP.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-06-07T19:26:24Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: Microsoft releases new fonts for Office 2007 & Windows Vista

With the release of Beta 2 for Windows Vista and Office 2007, some folks have noticed our recent inclusion of a new set of fonts that we've created. There's a fairly involved commentary about them here: http://neosmart.net/blog/archives/182.

Instead of rehashing the same discussion that everyone else is having about these fonts, (there's a video from Channel 9 that goes over most of the fonts - http://channel9.msdn.com/Showpost.aspx?postid=146749) I thought I'd comment about Microsoft Typography in general. A lot of people don't even know about Microsoft Typography - it's a group of folks within Microsoft that are their own little dev team of creatives that are considered to be at the forefront of typography - the study and creation of typefaces and fonts.

This might not seem like a big deal to you but it's incredibly important to computers overall. People forget how important fonts are when it comes to personal style as well as readability and overall attitude toward an interface or a written page. Everyone knows someone that fit these bills:

- The guy that can't figure out how to use anything except Times Roman

- The girl down the hall that has to use Comic Sans for everything she writes

- The guy that bold faces everything , overuses CAPITAL LETTERS and uses 4 different colors in his email

- The girl that has to use Lucida Handwriting or some weird unreadable script

- The guy that writes everything in Courier New

... fonts tell us a lot about the author that chooses them

I remember back in 1998, I got the chance to chat with a guy named Frank Artale, a Microsoft General Manager for Windows NT 5.0 (what eventually became Windows 2000) and an all around good guy. Everyone liked Frank - he was a former Southern California SE like myself back in the late 80's so SoCal always enjoyed having him. He had just taken on a larger job role in the Windows Product Group that included, among other things, responsibility for the Microsoft Typography team.

I sat there eating lunch with him and he told me that he was told by some higher ups that he was responsible for this Typography group. Not knowing anything about Typography, he decided to pay them a visit and see what the group was like. When he got to their end of the building, they were all in a conference room with a the lights off staring at a projection of someone's laptop. On the screen was a letter "G" and everyone was just looking at it in silence.

Frank, not knowing what was going on or what to do, simply followed along and stared right along with everyone else. Then, one of the people near the laptop reached over and clicked on something with the mouse. A little dot appeared on the character "G" making it a little rounder.

Suddenly, everyone in the room squealed. Some said in an outburst, "THERE WE GO!" and others high-fived each other. The lights went on, some folks started up conversations, and people seemed genuinely elated. Frank - wide-eyed at this point - quietly slipped out of the room, shaking his head. He told me that he figured it'd be best to just leave these folks to do their jobs because he didn't know a damned thing about what was going on and until he did, he wasn't gonna screw with them.

It made me get interested in seeing what was going on with our Typography group back then and I learned that they have their own web site at: http://www.microsoft.com/typography. They also participate in conferences and events that are oriented around fonts and typography like http://www.typecon.com and http://www.atypi.org/06_Lisbon.

Oh, by the way, a bunch of these fonts are downloadable here, if you own Visual Studio. They're licensed only for use by folks that own VS.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=22e69ae4-7e40-4807-8a86-b3d36fab68d3&displaylang=en

EPILOGUE:

The last time I checked, Frank had moved on to work for Veritas but I see now that he created Consera, a software company that HP acquired. He's since then moved on to work as a BizDev guy for XenSource, a Virtual Server/Microsoft Hypervisor competitor (as well as a VMWare competitor) that uses open source software. Sometime I'll write about the time a group of Partners/Consulting organizations formally asked Frank about making the Registry more accessible and better documented.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-06-07T09:44:02Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: Motorola "Q" Smartphone running Windows Mobile 5.0

The Motorola Q Smartphone running Windows Mobile 5.0 will be available soon. Press Release:

Check it out: http://local.live.com

New features:

User Collections

Collections are a major evolutionary step for our scratchpad. They allow users to not only add business listings or custom pushpins to their scratchpad, but to save multiple different collections to the cloud using their Windows Live ID and share those collections with friends, family, colleagues, or the internet community as a whole. Try it out—create a collection of your favorite places to eat when on the road, historic theaters where you grew up, strange oddities like giant yarn balls and frying pans in the Midwest, or whatever else strikes your fancy. Share the links with your IM buddies, over email, or blog them to Spaces.

And when you do try out collections, make sure to upload a few to www.PassThePOI.com.

Traffic

With support for about three dozen metro areas in the US, our partnership with Traffic.com provides our users with additional tools to enhance the mapping and directions experience. Flow data shows a quick visual representation of current traffic conditions across a wide area, making it easy to spot and avoid trouble spots. Incident and construction information adds more detail, giving users a better idea what might be causing a delay so they can judge how long it might last.

International Support

In this release, we have added support for Canada and the UK with maps, routing, address find support, local search, and more. We have expanded bird’s eye for the first time outside the US by adding a variety of locations in the UK. We will continue to add bird’s eye with the goal of covering at minimum 80% of the US and western European populations within 2 years, plus much more I am sure.

With this release, we also added support for city to city routing across most of western Europe, Australia and other regions.

New APIs

With this release, we have also updated the Virtual Earth Map Control with support for driving directions, geo-coding, instant mashups with Windows Live Local collections, and more. See http://blogs.msdn.com/virtualearth/archive/2006/05/23/596729.aspx for more info on the API.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-05-24T23:47:59Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: SQL Server – SQL Server 2005 SP1

Sort of old but worth mentioning... On April 19th, we announced the release to Web (RTW) of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1), marking the first major milestone since SQL Server 2005 launched in November. SP1 will include the normal feature fixes, Database Mirroring (DBM), SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE), SAP components and new options for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition users.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-05-22T23:53:02Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: WinXP Laptop Power consumption patch

This has been well known for a while but we haven't publicly posted a patch for it until now. Basically, if you're actively using USB 2.0 ports your laptop may be consuming far more power than necessary if it's using Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (which hopefully is pretty much everyone for security reasons) because SP2 made a change to the OS that prevented the system from putting the CPU into a slower/less power thirsty state when activity was low, when USB 2.0 devices were in use.

This patch will do nothing for you if you don't use USB 2.0 devices actively on your laptop. Most common scenarios are USB 2.0 network adapters, USB 2.0 flash drives, USB 2.0 port replicators, USB 2.0 mice, etc.

This is a great opportunity for anyone that writes and sells software to find out what's going on with regard to stablity issues with their software products. Here is a description of the program:
https://winqual.microsoft.com/default.aspx

How to get into the program:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/maintain/StartWER.mspx

Remember: This is a program for people that WRITE SOFTWARE to enable them to collect data through us about the failures in their particular software.

If you represent a corporate Microsoft customer interested in collecting ALL CRASH data in your company and putting it into your own database instead of funnelling it to Microsoft, you can do this using "Corporate Error Reporting" which is a downloadable software service for Windows 2000+ that is available to Volume Licensed customers. (Folks with Select Agreements or Enterprise Agreements)

These three environments are respectively referred to as the Legacy Client (LC), Enterprise Client (EC), and Specialized Security – Limited Functionality (SSLF) environments throughout this guide.

Guidance about how to harden computers in these three environments is provided for a group of distinct server roles. The countermeasures that are described and the tools that are provided assume that each server will have a single role. If you need to combine roles for some of the servers in your environment, you can customize the security templates that are included in the downloadable version of the guide to create the appropriate combination of services and security options. The server roles that are referenced in this guide include the following:

• Domain controllers that also provide DNS services
• Infrastructure servers that provide WINS and DHCP services
• File servers
• Print servers
• Web servers that run Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)
• Internet Authentication Services (IAS) servers
• Certificate Services servers
• Bastion hosts

Significant efforts were made to make this guidance well organized and easily accessible so that you can quickly find the information that you need and determine which settings are suitable for the computers in your organization.
This hotfix (known as the “Simple Policy” update or ND-lite) adds functionality to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 to greatly simplify IPsec policy creation and maintenance in Server and Domain Isolation scenarios. In the majority of cases, the installation of this hotfix significantly reduces the number of IPsec filters that are required for a Server or Domain Isolation deployment. We expect that this will result in the reduction of the number of IPsec filters from hundreds to only two (2).

The “Simple Policy” update will be most useful in the following scenarios:

Reducing the complexity of an existing Server Isolation and/or Domain Isolation deployment

Removing IPsec deployment blocking issues due to the complexity of the IPsec policy involved, e.g. where there are a large number of policy exceptions

The hotfix can be found via knowledgebase article KB 914841. It is available on the hotfix servers and will be rolled into subsequent service packs for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. KB reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914841/en-us

Exchange Hosted Services operates over the Internet and provides the follwing capabilities:
- Filtering for spam and virus protection
- Archiving to satisfy compliance requirements and internal policies
- Encryption to preserve email confidentiality
- Continuity for on going access to email during and after disasters

Services cost depends on the functionality the customer wants. Here's some rough numbers of what you can anticipate:

Microsoft Exchange Hosted Filtering: $1.09/user/month
Microsoft Exchange Hosted Archiving: $12.98/user/month
Microsoft Exchange Hosted Archiving - Extra Storage: $3.61/user/month
Microsoft Exchange Hosted Encryption: $1.41/user/month
Microsoft Exchange Hosted Continuity: $1.85/user/month

http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/howtobuy/default.mspx

Basically, it minimizes the complexity of backup, compliance, SPAM filtering, virus protection, and uptime for customers.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-04-17T21:49:26Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: Microsoft Virtual Earth for Windows Mobile updated

If you use Virtual Earth Mobile, you will need to update your app to version 1.50 before February 12. That's the day that the Virtual Earth servers will switch over completely to their new interface, and old clients will stop working. The new version is attached to this blog entry.

In addition to supporting the new interface, new features include:

driving directions from the MSN Mobile website

WiFi locator

asynchronous loading of maps

stretching map tiles that are already downloaded until new tiles are downloaded

finer zoom levels

help page

support for builtin GPS on the HP iPaq

http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/attachment/526876.ashx

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-02-09T07:31:15Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: "Gas Prices" Microsoft Gadget

This qualifies as cool: It's a Microsoft Gadget that shows you local gas prices & where to go to get the lowest based on your area code.

http://microsoftgadgets.com/forums/2510/ShowPost.aspx

No, it's not perfect being that not every gas station reports their pricing to the site but it's definitely a start. So add it to your http://www.live.com starter page!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-02-06T23:31:52Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: Microsoft Research's "Group Bar"

GroupBar is lightweight desktop tool created by the Microsoft VIBE group that offers enhanced window management capabilities in a Windows taskbar-like setting. The basic concept is that through simple drag-and-drop operations on window tiles within the bar, users can create lightweight, transient grouping relationships that allow them to perform certain higher-level window layout functions on multiple windows at once. In addition, windows and groups in the GroupBar can be persisted in a "Snapshot" which attempts to remember the position and contents of each window in a way that allows the Snapshot to be recreated at a later time, even if the windows have been rearranged or closed.

GroupBar requires no installation - just download the executable (GroupBar.exe) and run it. (Put in in your start-up group to run it automatically on start-up.) Note: creating Snapshots with the GroupBar produces .gss files in the same folder as GroupBar.exe, so save it in its own folder if you would like to avoid cluttering up other folders. GroupBar requires no uninstallation either - simply delete GroupBar.exe and any Snapshot (.gss) files it has created, and it is gone.

"Acquiring network IP address..."

It's annoying as hell. Most of the time, you do have an IP address allocated to your workstation and you can verify this by doing an IPCONFIG.EXE but the system doesn't seem to recognize this.

I believe this is the fix for this problem. It's a well known issue and I'm not sure why this hasn't been communicated better but the fix is a downloadable patch that doesn't appear as either a critical patch or a recommended patch. Strangely, it's a completely UNLISTED patch.

Download it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=17d997d2-5034-4bbb-b74d-ad8430a1f7c8

Check out the new enhancements to MSN Spaces:

(And there's more coming in the next couple months!)

Spaces Search. This is an incredibly cool feature that lets you find interesting spaces based on keyword, a user's profile information, or by clicking on most popular interests across all of spaces. You can also run a search from any space just by clicking "Search Spaces" in the header above. One thing to mention about the search feature is that it will be ramping up for a few days - but you can help make it better! Learn more about this on The Space Craft.

Mobile Search from Mobile Spaces! Search for spaces from your mobile device. Mike Smuga will be talking about this more over on his space soon.

Your own advertising on your space (as an option) to make money from clicks - powered by Kanoodle! (This feature is only available in the United States and Canada at this time.)

Book lists with Amazon integration. Automatically insert information from Amazon.com directly into your book list - and again, make money through Amazon Associates when people end up buying the book! It's very cool (by the way, our book is called Share Your Story if you want to add it to your book list :)

Better blog navigation. This feature is one of those things we needed to do. You can now "view more entries" at the bottom of the page, and navigate through Previous and Next pages while looking through blog entries.

Customized blog entry display. Choose how you want your blog entries to appear, by date or entry title. This is a great feature for people who write essays or incredibly insightful posts once a month. Date isn't really important in this case, whereas sorting by entry title may make more sense.

Integrated Help. Confused? Click the Learn link in the header above to figure out what to do next!

Enhanced Profile including General, Social, and Contact Info sections. Each section will have it's own permissions so any part you would like to limit access to (say your personal contact information), you can do it. There's also an updated profile module for the homepage with an actionable photo; anytime you see someone's picture anywhere you can right-click (or click on the down arrow) to view their contact card, space, profile, and more.

Live Contacts Beta! Brand new feature which you'll see popping up throughout Windows Live in time. What is it? It's the ability to subscribe to automatic contact updates. When your friend changes his or her address or phone number (in their Profile mentioned above), your address book will be automatically updated if you are subscribed to updates. This is crazy cool. Learn more here.
Which reminds me: Spaces now has contact cards like MSN/Windows Live Messenger! Just right-click on someone's profile photo (or click on the down arrow) and select "View contact card" to see a preview of their space.

Better commenting for blogs and now photos as well! This feature also has an (optional) clickable profile photo that you can leave behind when leaving a comment. And there's a mini text editor so you can format your comments (something I'm really glad we did!) kinda like blog entries. Note that if you would like to turn off photo comments, you can do this in Settings.

Photos are no longer limited to 30MB; you can now upload 500 photos per month without worrying about running out of storage space.

MetaWeblog API (OK, this one is from December – but it's still cool). Read more here.

Better URLs! Sometimes the little things matter the most. This is one of those things. Say goodbye to /members/. You can now be reached at http://spaces.msn.com/[username]. For example, http://spaces.msn.com/mike now works! We also have cleaner paths to pages, so if you want to give someone a link to your blog or to your photos, you can send them to http://spaces.msn.com/[username]/blog or /photos.

Xbox Live integration. Themes, recent games module, and gamer card integration! This feature has been the single biggest reason my gamer score is now clocking in at 500 instead of 0. If you're into Xbox Live, these features rock! Check out my theme and gamer card and you can see why.

New themes and categorized theme picker. We now have well over 100 themes!

Do you like email or mobile publishing? You can now publish from 3 email addresses instead of just one.

For those of you with private spaces (you know who you are!) people can now request access to spaces via anonymous email. I like to think about this as "knocking on the door of someone's house".

Privacy controls (communication preferences) for who can request access to your space and to your contact information and how. Check it out in Settings.

We doubled the size limit on the HTML PowerToy.

What you basically need to do is download and deploy the ENTERPRISE MSN SEARCH TOOLBAR. We've released a special package with JUST the Search Toolbar for Internet Explorer so that both Desktop Search and Search Toolbar can coexist. And just as with the Windows Desktop Search, we've also made it easy for customers to distribute the product Internationally using the MUI pack for it, and manage it using Active Directory Group Policy.

One reason you might be interested in this is because it's really easy to set up "white lists" for the Pop Up Blocker… so that internal Enterprise web sites can provide authorized 'pop ups' and new windows that aren't blocked by the toolbar. This is managable using Group Policy.

Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Desired Configuration Monitoring (DCM) is a powerful way to maintain a consistent configuration across all server roles and hardware types and to ensure that all servers have required software updates, service packs, and drivers installed. DCM requires Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows XP for component installation and will monitor most Microsoft Windows Server System applications and hardware configurations. DCM runs on any server application where configurations can be accessed through Microsoft Active Directory, Window Management Instrumentation (WMI), metabase, file system, and registries.

DCM has three guides associated with it:

Why? Well, there are a lot of obvious reasons, but then there are also a lot of not so obvious reasons:

PALM DESIGN
There's no way around the fact that this phone's got a great, well tested, well studied design. For some reason or another, our other partners haven't really been able to put together a design that is palatable to both consumers and enterprise customers. This thing not only meets the criteria of both, it's got serious cool factor as well. Palm just straight up makes great designs. This ensures end-user acceptance.

VERIZON NETWORK
Make no mistake - the fact that this is on Verizon Wireless is huge. Verizon's got the fastest wireless network in the US - clocked at 700kbps over cellular - and it's also got the best cellular coverage. Good coverage + good bandwidth = VERY good start. This ensures performance and usability.

MICROSOFT SOFTWARE
Sorry Palm, but it has always been our forte that Windows Mobile has addressed the basic needs of Enterprise customers. Centralized management. Security & Encryption. Integration with corporate mail. Similar UI to desktop software. Blackberry-like EMail Delivery. Custom programmability. Remote "data erasure". This stuff might not be that important to consumers but it's an absolute must for Enterprise customers. This ensures an audience with corporate customers.

I already own a Samsung i730 Pocket PC Phone and I love it. Really - I do. But I went out and ordered one of these babies the moment it was made available to us. I simply love the form factor and if a geek doesn't have his toys, what does he have?

(Note: Microsoft doesn't recommend that people use this patch)

Ilfak Guilfanov who is being billed as one of the foremost experts in Windows low level technology has released a temporary/interim patch for Windows that's NOT from Microsoft.

EXE file: http://castlecops.com/article-6436-nested-0-0.html
(MSI file located here: http://handlers.sans.org/tliston/WindowsMetafileFix.html)

Technical details:

"This is a DLL which gets injected to all processes loading user32.dll. It patches the Escape() function in gdi32.dll. The result of the patch is that the SETABORT escape sequence is not accepted anymore."

Once Microsoft releases an official patch, or if the above doesn't work, you can uninstall it from your Add/Remove Programs menu. It'll be listed as "Windows WMF Metafile Vulnerability HotFix".

The Internet Storm Center gives this patch its stamp of approval:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have very carefully scrutinized this patch. It does only what is advertised, it is reversible, and, in our opinion, it is both safe and effective.

The word from Redmond isn't encouraging. We've heard nothing to indicate that we're going to see anything from Microsoft before January 9th.

The upshot is this: You cannot wait for the official MS patch, you cannot block this one at the border, and you cannot leave your systems unprotected.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-01-04T01:05:13Z</dcterms:modified>

RELEASE: A commentary on the WMF Vulnerability

The sad ridiculous media hype over this vulnerability truly highlights how warped the priorities are of many journalists - particularly those on the Internet. The common journalistic claim to "inform the public" and "defend their right to know" sometimes seems like a giant front for a real agenda to "create panic and hysteria"... because as we all know, negativity always generates an audience in the same way that highway accidents attract rubberneckers.

To be clear, I have no problem with people that want to bring attention to this vulnerability. That's important. What's not cool is that most of these same people absolve all responsibility for informing people about what to do about it.

Net Net: If there's a problem, why not link to the "official description" of the problem instead of some 1 man consulting firm hack that wants to get his name in the press... and God forbid, why not link to some"potential solutions"? Why write about the supposed cataclysmic disaster impending and not tell people how to avoid it?

THE PROBLEM:

The official Microsoft advisory on this issue is located here:
Microsoft Security Advisory (912840): Vulnerability in Graphics Rendering Engine Could Allow Remote Code Execution. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/912840.mspx

THE SOLUTION:

There are a number of solutions available.

SOFTWARE DATA EXECUTION PROTECTION:
There's a real simple solution - Enable software DEP, a feature of Windows XP Service Pack 2. Here's a quote from the advisory that no one seems to be reading.
"I have software DEP enabled on my system, does this help mitigate the vulnerability?
Yes. Windows XP Service Pack 2 also includes software-enforced DEP that is designed to reduce exploits of exception handling mechanisms in Windows. By default software-enforced DEP applies to core operating system components and services. This vulnerability can be mitigated by enabling DEP for all programs on your computer.
For additional information about how to “Enable DEP for all programs on your computer”, see the product documentation."

To enable or mess around with the DEP settings:
- Go to START->CONTROL PANEL->SYSTEM
- Click ADVANCED tab & press Performance SETTINGS button
- Click DATA EXECUTION PROTECTION tab
Make sure that the "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" radio button is clicked.

HARDWARE DATA EXECUTION PROTECTION:
This is an even easier solution. Enable hardware DEP support (also called NX support) on your PC if you have a recent Pentium 4 from Feb 2005 on, or an AMD Athlon chip.
(BTW If you have no idea what this is, check out http://www.updatexp.com/data-execution-prevention.html for a 3rd party explanation of what software and hardware DEP is.)

DISABLE OR UNREGISTER "SHIMGVW.DLL"
A couple of security firms, including Verisign's iDefense, have published workarounds that appear to mitigate the threat. According to iDefense, Windows users can disable the rendering of WMF files using the following hack:

1. Click on the Start button on the taskbar.
2. Click on Run...
3. Type "regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll" to disable.
4. Click ok when the change dialog appears.

iDefense notes that this workaround may interfere with certain thumbnail images loading correctly, though I have used the hack on my machine and haven't had any problems yet. The company notes that once Microsoft issues a patch, the WMF feature may be enabled again by entering the command "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" in step three above.

There's even more than this, but I'll leave 3 as a starter. This hopefully will tell you, dear reader, how easy it is to protect yourself - in fact, many of you probably already are by virtue of WinXPSP2's software DEP feature that you installed and didn't even know was operational.

...but oooohh watch out. The press says that "THERE IS NO KNOWN PATCH AVAILABLE FROM MICROSOFT!" Aigh! What are we going to do?!? There'll be panic in the streets! Mayhem and chaos across the Internet! Dogs and cats living with each other! (With apologies to Bill Murray) We'rrrrrre allllll gonnnnnnna diiiiiiiiiiiie!

Or maybe not. Film at 11.
