[taken from the Windows Team Blog] I want to take a moment and let folks know about the Windows Experience Pack we are making available starting today for people with PCs running Windows 7 and/or Windows Live Essentials. While we can’t send all of you on vacation, we can give you something special to help you daydream and customize your PC and online experience.
With the Windows Experience Pack, you are able create an alter-ego of yourself in a specific destination – a beach, mountain, safari, or city. When you create your alter-ego, you create a fully customized avatar for that destination that becomes a part of a Windows Live Messenger and Windows 7 theme for your PC. You’ll also be able to download a .jpg image of your avatar to share, print, or use as your icon on social networks. For a specific destination you pick, the following Windows Live Messenger elements are created for you to use in Messenger for your alter-ego: - 1 static Display Picture
- Up to 4 Dynamic Display Pictures
- A Wink
- 7 new Emoticons
- A new Messenger Scene
For Windows 7, you are given the choice between 3 desktop backgrounds for your destination and a screensaver featuring multiple photos from your destination. The Windows Experience Pack was created and optimized for Windows 7, but it can be downloaded and used on PCs running Windows XP or Windows Vista too (although performance and features may vary). [taken from the Windows Blog] This is an 8-page high-level discussion of the fundamental challenges and benefits of cloud computing security, plus some of the questions that cloud service providers and organisations using cloud services need to consider when evaluating a new move, or expansion of existing services, to the cloud. This document presumes that the reader is familiar with the core concepts of cloud computing and basic principles of cloud security. It is not the goal of this paper to provide all the answers to the questions of security in the cloud or to provide an exhaustive framework for cloud security.
------------ As with any other technological shift or change, security benefits and risks need to be addressed before the full benefits of cloud computing can be realised. Considerations such as compliance and risk management; identity and access management; service integrity; endpoint integrity; and information protection should all be explored when evaluating, implementing, managing, and maintaining cloud computing solutions. - Compliance and Risk Management: Organisations shifting part of their business to the cloud are still responsible for compliance, risk, and security management.
- Identity and Access Management: Identities may come from different providers, and providers must be able to federate from on-premise to the cloud, as well as to enable collaboration across organisation and country borders.
- Service Integrity: Cloud-based services should be engineered and operated with security in mind, and the operational processes should be integrated into the organisation’s security management.
- Endpoint Integrity: As cloud-based services originate--and are then consumed--on-premise, the security, compliance, and integrity of the endpoint have to be part of any security consideration.
- Information Protection: Cloud services require reliable processes for protecting information before, during, and after the transaction.
While they bring many potential benefits, services provided through cloud computing may also create new concerns, some of which are not yet fully understood. Adopting a cloud service may also require IT organisations to adapt to data management no longer under their direct control. This is especially true in a “hybrid model” in which some processes remain on-premise and some are in the cloud, requiring new and extended security processes that encompass multiple providers to achieve comprehensive protection of information. Risk management and security management remain the responsibility of any organisation, but should be extended to include the cloud provider(s). Clear strategies related to these five considerations[1], as well as a strong service-level framework, will help to ensure that implemented services deliver cloud computing functionality that meets security requirements and business expectations. [1] These are just some of the question areas which must be considered. Further details and advice on cloud computing in general can be found in the papers from The Cloud Security Alliance and ENISA. WHITEPAPER: “Cloud Computing Security Considerations” http://bit.ly/beL73O Today I’m pleased to announce we have shipped the RC for Visual Studio 2010 / .NET Framework 4! MSDN subscribers can download the bits immediately from this location. The RC will be made available to the public on Wednesday February 10.
We got a lot of invaluable feedback on Beta 2 through Connect as well as your survey responses. In particular many of you pointed out areas of performance where we were not at parity with VS2008 and it was impacting your ability to adopt the product. Some of those areas of feedback included general UI responsiveness (including painting, menus, remote desktop and VMs), editing (typing, scrolling, and Intelisense), designers (Silverlight and WPF in particular), improved memory usage, debugging (stepping, managed / native interop), build times, and solution/project load. Since then Brian and I have been doing daily stand up meetings with the team working through the feedback. We’ve conducted several private CTP’s with people who reported issues in order to validate the direction of the work. In December we made the hard call to extend the Beta 2 period to continue to drive improvements into the product. I had a chance to discuss the things we found and the work we did with the Channel 9 guys: Jason Zander- Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate Released- 23 minutes, 7 seconds http://ecn.channel9.msdn.com/o9/ch9/1/3/9/5/2/5/JasonZanderVS2010RC_ch9.wmv
DOWNLOAD: Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 Release Candidate http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/dd582936.aspx [taken from Jason Zander’s blog] February 07 Today, as part of our ongoing evaluation of Microsoft’s Internet search privacy practices, we are pleased to announce an important change in our data retention policy. We will delete the entire Internet Protocol address associated with search queries at six months rather than at 18 months. This new and significant step will be incorporated into our existing privacy practices, which already provide strong protections for Bing users.
This change is the result of a number of factors including a continuing evaluation of our business needs, the current competitive landscape and our ongoing dialogue with privacy advocates, consumer groups, and regulators – including the Article 29 Working Party, the group of 27 European national data protection regulators charged with providing advice to the European Commission and other EU institutions on data protection. Under our current policy, as soon as Microsoft receives a Bing search query we take steps to de-identify the data by separating it from account information that could identify the person who performed the search. Then, at 18 months, we take the additional step of deleting the IP address, the de-identified cookie ID and any other cross-session IDs associated with the query. The core components of this policy will not change. Our new policy will change the date at which we delete the IP address associated with search queries to six months. We will implement the new policy over the next 12 to 18 months. … Read more here: NEWS: Microsoft Advances Search Privacy with Bing http://bit.ly/98UZyb DOCUMENT: Privacy Protections in Microsoft’s Ad Serving System and the Process of “De-identification” http://bit.ly/anukrF Ziff Davis released their list of the 10 Most Vulnerable Software Apps of 2009. WEBCAST: BPOS 101 http://blogs.technet.com/msonline/archive/2010/01/19/webinar-bpos-101.aspx Interested in Cloud Computing? Here’s a quick slide that’ll help you understand the technology space and how Microsoft’s offerings addresses these areas: The space of most immediate impact for many organizations currently running their messaging, collaboration, and real-time communications services on-premise is the area of “Software as a Service” or SaaS. This is a space where Microsoft has made demonstrable investments in to ensure customers can choose to move part or all of their investment in these infrastructure services into the “cloud” and into a hosted datacenter environment. managed & monitored by Microsoft. This is an area not fully understood by many customers however a great way to get an understanding of these technologies is to review this 3rd party webcast recording done by SaaS-IT Consulting. It goes over the importance of this area of cloud computing, what Microsoft offers, and why they believe the Microsoft SaaS implementation to be the best available on the market: (The recording is also downloadable – it’s about a 8MB file) This was unique enough to highlight: An overview of our motion capture controller, “Project Natal” for Xbox 360 There really hasn’t been much in the way of an explanation on how Natal works until now. This interview with Scientific American goes over the components of the Natal “camera” along with the technology that enables the device to interpret movement in real time across multiple body types and differentiate between individuals even when the overlap. Instead of trying to preprogram actions, Microsoft decided to teach its gaming technology to recognize gestures in real time just like a human does: by extrapolating from experience. Jamie Shotton, a researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge in England, devised a machine learning algorithm for that purpose. It also recognizes poses and renders them in the game space on-screen at 30 frames per second, a rate that conveys smooth movement. Essentially, Natal-enhanced Xboxes will do motion capture on the fly, without the need for the mirror-studded spandex suit of conventional motion-capture approaches. Training Natal for this task required Microsoft to amass a large amount of biometric data. The firm sent observers to homes around the globe, where they videotaped basic motions such as turning a steering wheel or catching a ball, Kipman says. Microsoft researchers later laboriously selected key frames within this footage and marked each joint on each person's body. Kipman and his team also went into a Hollywood motion-capture studio to gather data on more acrobatic movements. "During training, we need to provide the algorithm with two things: realistic-looking images that are synthesized and, for each pixel, the corresponding part of the body," Shotton says. The algorithm processes the data and changes the values of different elements to achieve the best performance. To keep the amount of data manageable, the team needed to figure out which elements were most relevant for training. For example, the system doesn't need to recognize the entire body mass, but only the spacing of skeletal joints. After whittling down the data to the essential motions, the researchers mapped each unique pose to 12 models representing different ages, genders and body types. With the Microsoft cloud strategy, organizations can now move towards cloud computing models with the confidence that their existing investments in their datacenter are safe, and can be leveraged in this new paradigm. Existing applications and services will be able to move to the private cloud without the need to learn unproven technologies, or introduce unnecessary complexity. At the same time Microsoft will evolve its private cloud offerings by bringing learning and technology from running Microsoft’s global datacenters and the Windows® Azure platform.
The Microsoft Private Cloud enables: - Management of the datacenter fabric as a single pool of resources.
- Delivery of scalable applications and workloads.
- Focus on the management of the datacenter service and it’s dependencies.
HOW TO BUILD A PRIVATE CLOUD TODAY Today customers can begin their journey to the private cloud by deploying the Microsoft products and technologies they know and trust. - 12:30 – 1:45 PM No more “No Repro”
How many times have you used or heard the line, “It works on my machine” or “I can’t recreate that bug”? During most software projects, countless hours are spent (wasted?) trying to communicate bugs – what happened, when, why, how – between testers and developers. Many bugs get swept away because they can’t be reproduced, only to be found the bugs really do exist – when the end users are running the system in production. In this session we’ll take a look at how Visual Studio 2010 will help eliminate this game of “no repro ping pong” and streamline communications between developers and QA. - 2:00 PM-3:15 PM Architecture for Everyone
Even before the ink is dry most software architecture documents are out of date. All it takes is that first line of code to be written. The team comes up with great designs. How can the design principles be enforced? How can you see what the architecture of the system really looks like, as it has been written, beyond just the high-level design? In this session, we’ll examine the architecture tools in Visual Studio 2010 that provide practical support for software architecture. Play games (aka "challenges"), score points, and compete with your friends while improving your productivity with Office.
As a concept test, this add-in is not supported, but is an opportunity for you to try out an idea we are working on and let us know what you think. For additional challenges and the opportunity to earn more points, download Office 2010 Beta. Apparently the press seems to agree that this is a pretty cool idea for training: Requirements: Vista or Windows 7 (32/64 bit), Office 2007 or Office 2010 (32/64 bit) Limitations: English only, Works with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint only, Does not support versions of Office earlier than Office 2007 The Windows Performance team did a monster article about comparing system states across multiple servers to try to differentiate them and understand what could possibly be causing different results to the same tests. --------------- There often arises a need to figure out what may have changed on a system, either due to a specific issue or even to compare the difference between two systems. Today I would like to introduce you to the Windows System State Analyzer utility. Unless you are a developer or tester, you probably have never heard of this tool, as it is part of the Windows 2008 R2 Logo Software Certification and Windows 2008 R2 Logo Program Software Certification toolkits. The basic functionality of the System State Analyzer tool is to allow you to compare two snapshots taken at different points in time. This allows you to compare the state of a machine both before and after an application install for instance. Today I will give you a run-through of what the tool looks like while doing a compare of a system both before and after installing a software package, in this case Virtual PC 2007. The initial UI will look something like this:
Do you use the Windows Server Print Server role in your environment? Are you using the either of the print server management packs for OpsMgr 2007? Do you use the print management console? If you answered yes to any of these questions then we would greatly appreciate your input to help form the future manageability plans for the print server role. Head over to the OpsMgr public Connect site and fill out the "Print Server Management Survey".
Registration to the Connect program only requires a Windows Live ID. The survey is anonymous and should take about 5 minutes to fill out the 11 questions. Thank you in advance for your time and your feedback.
